Street Market
What do people usually buy on the street market?
People can find a lot of things on a street market. And they are usually great bargains. You can buy groceries obviously and there are street food stalls, and I strongly recommend you grab a bite. Back in my hometown in Xinjiang, on a bazaar or a street market, you can even buy livestock, like a sheep or a cow, pretty amazing.
Do you prefer to go shopping in the shopping mall or on the street market?
Oh, I’m definitely a street market guy. It’s down to earth, it buzzes with real life. Street market is one of my favorite places to go. It’s where culture happens. I’m never really a fan of those recently built, high end shopping malls, I mean, there’s usually an “Organic Mart” in those malls where they charge you a premium for so called free range eggs or sustainably caught salmon. Talking about rip-off.
When was the last time you went to a street market?
Actually just yesterday, a street market about 10-minute walk from my apartment. I usually buy groceries there, not a big place, just one narrow lane only for pedestrians, you can cover the distance in about 20 minutes. I bought some pork ribs, kelp and carrots, I was in the mood for a pork stew. I tried this recipe of my dad’s and it was good.
Are there many street markets in China?
There are many of them. Government officials actually vocally promote street markets because street markets can be the heart and soul of a community, ensuring food supplies for local residents. They can be tourist attractions. They also contribute to local economy, they provide locations for small businesses, creating jobs. A lot of people’s livelihood depends on street markets.
