Describe a contest you would like to participate in.

示范音频:

You should say :

What the contest is about

Where the contest will take place

When it will be held

And explain why you would like to participate in it

As an outdoor enthusiast, a contest that I’m particularly interested in is the Yading Sky Run. It is called Sky Run because contestants run at high altitudes, 4000m above sea level on average, the maximum altitude is actually 5030m. It’s basically like a marathon that takes place in the high mountains in the Yading Nature Reserve.

The Yading Nature Reserve is located in the South of Sichuan Province. This area of Yading is blessed with immense natural beauty, including the three sacred peaks (Mount Chenrezig, Jampayang, and Chenadorje) which loom over the National Park at an altitude of over 6,000m. I have actually done 2 multi-day treks in the park before, in my opinion, it is the most beautiful place I have ever been to, bar none.

In the past, the contest was usually held in June when the weather is relatively pleasant. Due to the pandemic, the contest has been suspended for now and I don’t know when the next contest will be. I hope it will resume sometime in 2023 maybe.

I would like to participate in the Sky Run firstly because I haven’t able to travel for a long time, obviously because of quarantine. And I have been having a really bad case of cabin fever. Can’t wait to be out in the wild, be close to nature. Secondly, the contest is such a daunting physical challenge, covering a route of 40km with a cut-off time of 12 hours. I’m not sure if I could really do it but I’d like to have my physical limits tested.

1. What are the contests commonly seen on TV programs?

示范音频:

There’s like a ton of them. I think a lot of people have watched Hell’s Kitchen, a reality competition cooking show, hosted by the fiery-tempered celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay. Each season, two teams of chefs compete for a job as head chef at a restaurant, while working in the kitchen of a restaurant setup in the television studio. Another very well known contest is…the Voice. It is a singing competition where instead of having a person walk out and see the judges when they start their audition, the competitors walk out and start performing with the judges turned around. Then, any judge that wants them on their team can hit a button to turn around.

注释:

setup 布景

2. Why are competition shows popular?

Well, first of all, there’s suspense, you never know who’s gonna win until the very end, and that takes the audience on an emotional roller coaster with the contestants as people are eliminated one by one from the competition. The suspense is really intense, it gives people adrenaline rushes. These competition shows also allow people to imagine gaining fame through media exposure. People can simply sit and fantasize about becoming a winner, a celebrity themselves. Plus, there’s also drama in these shows, people so love watching the contestants pitted against each other with guns blazing, trying to take each other down, sometimes saying or doing things that flabbergast the audience.

注释:

suspense 悬念

an emotional roller coaster 情感过山车

adrenaline rush 肾上腺素分泌(激动,紧张,兴奋)

media exposure 媒体报道

fantasize about 幻想(v)

be pitted against 与…对抗

with guns blazing 全力以赴地

flabbergast 令人吃惊(v)

3. What kinds of industries need competition? Why?

Essentially all industries need competition, that’s how we have better-performing products. Take consumer electronics, a couple decades ago, Intel dominated the world’s CPU market, with AMD being the underdog. For many years it seemed like AMD was destined to play second fiddle to Intel in microprocessor market share. But with AMD’s new generations of highly-successful, budget friendly Ryzen microprocessors, the market as of 2021 is 50/50 between the two companies. As consumers, we love to see this cutthroat competition, we have had enough with Intel’s overpriced, underwhelming CPUs, we are just glad that now we have affordable but also high-end alternatives.

注释:

underdog 弱者

play second fiddle to 处于从属地位

cutthroat competition 非常激烈的竞争

underwhelming 不太行的,表现一般般的

alternative 替代物

4. Do you think it is necessary to encourage people to compete with others in companies?

I think encouraging competition within a company does more harm than good. I wanna talk about the Pareto Discipline or the 80/20 rule that I think applies to all companies. That means, within an organization, it’s always the top 20% high achievers contributing 80% of the output. The rank-and-file members just can’t compete with the top performers. What usually happens is that the ordinary employees end up competing against each other by putting in more hours for the same pay, eventually, it becomes this rat race where no one is wining out, this only makes people feel utterly exhausted and creates a demotivating work environment.

注释:

Pareto Discipline 2/8原则

rank and file 基层的/基层员工

rat race 卷

demotivating 令人气馁的
