Part 1 Running

1)Do you go running a lot?

Yes, I do, and I especially like running outside. I think the fresh air can pump more oxygen into my lung and vessels and I can enjoy the sceneries alongside my route. However, if I run on a treadmill, running suddenly becomes a boring burden.

2)Where do you usually go running?

Anywhere. I mean, as long as I do not interfere with other pedestrians and cars, I can run anywhere in the city—parks, pavements, even inside my community. But I would always remember running laps on campus with my basketball teammates. That was my most precious memory of university.

3)When was the last time you went running?

Yesterday, seriously. I was super nervous about today’s test and could not fall asleep. To relax a little beat, I went downstairs for some fresh air. I suddenly felt like running and took a few steps forward. Actually, the farther I ran, the more relieved I was. At last, although my heat was beating fast, my mind was calmer than ever.

4) What do you think of running as a sport?

It is probably the most accessible sport for ordinary people. I mean, people only need two legs to go running. However, running is not that simple. The posture, once incorrect, might lead to irreversible results to the knees, even spines of the runners.

Describe a piece of good advice that you gave to someone

You should say:

Who you gave the advice to

What the advice was

Why you gave the advice

And explain how he/she followed your advice

During university time, a friend of mine was super shy and dare not to talk to strangers. He even chose to spend 5 pounds of deliver fee to order foods online rather than heading opposite the street to the grocery, which was only 50 meters from our apartment.

Since he majored in translation, when he graduated, it is imperative that he communicate extensively with different clients. So, he needed to improve his professional ability, as well as his willingness to communicate with strangers. Acknowledging that fact, I strongly recommended that he went to the English corner specifically designed for foreign students and workers to practice speaking with native volunteers.

Foreseeably, he strongly opposed the idea and said that he’d rather die than doing this—well he stopped begging for death immediately when I promised to treat him at a local porterhouse.

The first time at the English corner, however, was far from successful. He wandered for 40 minutes until a super friendly lady came to him and complained about the terrible weather in London in autumn. I then accompanied him in the first three events and saw more and more smiles crawling on his face.

After one month, he even said hi to over 10 people at the English corner upon arrival——he’s already a star there. After one semester, he became utterly confident in communicating and the company he interned at granted him the return offer with a considerable amount of salary.

Part 3

1)Do you think parents should give their children advice?

I think they should, but only advice, not orders nor commands. As parents are far more experienced in life than their kids, they should definitely pass on those precious experience to help children avoid some possible pitfalls. For example, parents have the responsibility to alert their children of the danger of using knives and playing with fire.

However, when the children grow older and have their own judgement, they might reject some of the advice given and at this time, if the price is not too high for them to bear, their parents should let them learn from their own experience rather than dictating.

2)Should teachers give students advice?

Definitely and giving advice is an important part of teachers’ job responsibility. For example, an English teacher should not only teach new words and rules of grammar, but also the way to effectively take in, absorb these new knowledges and the way to adapt them to a real context.

In most cases, teachers provide a generic method for most of the students but in some certain circumstances, for example, the student’s mental or physical health is in bad condition, teacher should adjust his/her proposal accordingly to cater to the situation. As the saying goes, “teach students to their own ability”.

3)Do you think it is necessary for us to listen to friends’ advice?

I think friends’ advice is super valuable because they might have been through the same or similar situation that we encounter. Therefore, based on those first-hand experience, we can avoid even the most trivial or deceptive mistakes.

For example, I wanted to buy a concert ticket of Westlife and my friend told me not to connect to the WIFI or the internet access may become lagging. I did accordingly and bought the ticket immediately after it was released. However, some so-called friends may provide deceptive advice that may lead us in a wrong way because they can benefit from our failure or they are just jealous of our success. These kind of people, we should not befriend with.

4) How do people give young people and old people advice?

I think to young people, people would want them to change their behavioral pattern because they have not or have just developed a fixed way of doing things, therefore it is easier to change their way of action. What’s more, since they are more willing to seek improvement, they take in any advice they think is useful and people are more willingly to provide more comprehensive advice to help them.

However, for old people, they do not want to make a change, so people would narrow down their advice to a limited range, like the ways to keep healthy or to enjoy their life, not how to make money or fulfill their life goals.

5) What are the areas in which people are more or less willing to accept advice?

I think people are more willing to take in advice in areas that they are unfamiliar with. Since they do not have this certain kind of knowledge, they urgently need a reliable source of information to rely on. For example, when people are ill, they have a kind of blind faith in those famous doctors and medical professionals and treat them as God.

But when people need a breakthrough in the field of their expertise, it is hard for them to value others’ advice by heart. Their mindsets have been in a fixed form and are hard to change. For example, if I am a teacher and other people introduce a new system of pedagogical device, I probably would not accept that.
