由此可以选出第二空是parsimonious(吝啬、小气)。

parsimonious adj.
very unwilling to spend money or use resources

She's too parsimonious to heat the house properly.

dispute vt.
question whether (a statement or alleged fact) is true or valid

The accusations are not disputed.

self-aggrandizing adj.
doing or saying things to make yourself seem more powerful or important

His opponents sought to portray him as a self-aggrandizing fantasist.

notion n.
a belief or idea

The show's director rejects the notion that seeing violence on television has a harmful effect on children.

bestow vt.
confer or present (an honour, right, or gift)

Many books were bestowed on her.

Prose disputes the notion that, as a patron of the arts, Peggy Guggenheim was parsimonious; Guggenheim, Prose argues, simply had limited funds to bestow on the many artists and writers who depended on her.

The enthusiasm that many English artists and writers felt regarding the Labour Party (i) _______ amid complaints that arts funding remained as (ii) _______ under Labour as it had been under the Tory Party. And even though the government recently announced a significant funding boost for the Arts Council, some arts leaders still refuse to (iii) _______ Labour.

intensify vt. & vi.
become or make more intense

The dispute began to intensify.

resurface vi.
arise or become evident again

Serious concerns about the welfare of animals eventually resurfaced.

wane vi.
especially of a condition or feeling) decrease in vigour, power, or extent; become weaker

Confidence in the dollar waned.

far-reaching adj.
having important and widely applicable effects or implications

The practice had far-reaching environmental consequences.

boost n.
an occasion when something is improved or increased

The lowering of interest rates will give a much-needed boost to the economy.

The enthusiasm that many English artists and writers felt regarding the Labour Party waned amid complaints that arts funding remained as parsimonious under Labour as it had been under the Tory Party. And even though the government recently announced a significant funding boost for the Arts Council, some arts leaders still refuse to trust Labour.
