CE

mitigate vt.
to make something less harmful, unpleasant, or bad

It is unclear how to mitigate the effects of tourism on the island.

relieve vt.
to make an unpleasant feeling, such as pain or worry, less strong

She relieved her boredom at home by learning how to type.

ponderous adj.
dull, laborious, or excessively solemn; boring because it is too slow, long, or serious.

The ponderous reporting style makes the evening news dull viewing.

exacerbate vt.
to make something that is already bad even worse

This attack will exacerbate the already tense relations between the two communities.

gripping adj.
so interesting or exciting that it holds your attention completely.

I found the book so gripping that I couldn't put it down.

The movie's ponderousness is mitigated/relieved by the gripping performance turned in by the lead actor.

Contrary to the proclamations of many scientists, the problems visible in small, uncontrolled medical studies are not necessarily ________ larger, randomized controlled studies, which can be faulty as well.

A. germane to
B. alleviated by
C. predicted by
D. inherent in
E. mitigated by
F. characteristic of

BE

Contrary to the proclamations of many scientists, the problems visible in small, uncontrolled medical studies are not necessarily alleviated/ mitigated by larger, randomized controlled studies, which can be faulty as well.
