Part 1 Tea and coffee

1) Do people like tea and coffee nowadays?

Truly people need something to refresh their mind when working or studying. As they almost all have great pressure, they stay up late at night. To avoid being sleepy, they need to absorb caffeine to tickle their nerves. Some young people even drink several cups of coffee one single day.

2) Do you prefer to use tea or coffee to serve your quests?

As I am a more traditional type of Chinese, I would like to have tea most of the time. For me, beverage itself does not only stand for something to ease the thirst, but a means for two people to spend some time chatting with each other. When making tea and drinking tea is a more complicated procedure, we can get the time to talk.

3) When was the last time you had a cup of coffee?

I have to admit that I just finished the last sip before I walk into this room. It could be considered as some preparation. Because, actually I had a terrible sleep last night after I had tea in the evening. I don’t usually do this but I was rushing my final paper yesterday and I definitely needed something to cheer me up. I hope I could take a nap after this test.

4) Do you usually buy your coffee in a coffee shop?

Yeah, I mean, why not? There are numerous coffee shops scattered around the city and people can almost find one within a 100-meter walk. In order to obtain more customers, those shops all provide high-quality coffee at a reasonable price so regular workers like you and me can also afford.

Part 2

Describe a drawing/painting that you like
You should say:

When you first saw this painting
What the painting is about
Who drew/painted it
And explain why you like this drawing/painting

The painting Mona Lisa is probably the most famous art piece in the world and even Leonardo Da Vinci himself would not anticipate the popularity of his work. Actually, I could not remember the first time I saw it.

Normally when I see a painting, it would bring up past memories about it, but Mona Lisa is so famous that it was almost everywhere on the internet and in reality. The real masterpiece rests silently in the Louvre Museum in Paris though. I would definitely visit the great museum if I have the chance.

To be honest, as a person with limited aesthetic appreciation ability, I once doubted that how could a mediocre woman sitting on a chair, barely smiling, be so attractive as to become the top masterpiece. But as time went by, the harmony and peace the painting exhibits really moved me and as long as I looked at it, I could actually be calmed.

And the seemingly ordinary woman also started to shine with elegance. Even the background, those mounts and rivers were dearer to me.

What makes it more interesting is that, as time went by, researchers and adventurers captured perplexing details from the painting, claiming that the obscure letters and digits in the painting could be some mysterious codes that lead to a hidden treasure. That caused massive discussion henceforth. One book called the Da Vinci Code became my favorite.

Part 3

1) What are the differences between painting and drawing?

To be honest, to me, painting and drawing are almost the same. My appreciation of art pieces is not affected by the type of art, but by whether they fit my taste.

However, one slight difference I could tell is that the course I took in primary school was called drawing and I was really bad at it so the so-called drawings were hideous to look at, while the worldwide famous depictions are called paintings. So, I suspect that drawing means less professional creations while paintings are those with greater artistic value, like the works from skilled artists.

2) Why do some people keep a painting for a longtime?

For those businesspeople, I suppose, they value not the painting itself but the price it represents. So, they do not keep that painting, they kind of store it as a commodity for sale. Whenever the painting’s style, or the author that creates it become famous, the businesspeople can earn a great fortune from it.

However, for most of people who keep a painting for a long time, it must stand for some stories. Maybe the painting is their passed relative’s possession and every time they look at it, they are called into those precious but long-gone memories with their loved ones.

3) How does building style affect people’s lives?

I do think building style has a great impact on our lives in a way that is difficult to notice. For example, if an apartment is designed to allow more sunlight, people are therefore more likely to be in light-mood when they can embrace the nature even in the urban areas.

While for the basement or other poorly designed rooms, if the artificial lights are the main luminance source, no matter how bright the room is, people will feel strangled as they cannot see the outside world. Another factor is ventilation. If people open the windows and the air in the room does not move, it becomes dense and suffocating. In the summer, I believe, the room will be steaming.

4) Should children learn to draw and paint? Why?

I think they should. For one, they can learn to appreciate art pieces through creating them on their own. They will know the great insights behind some of the renowned paintings. For another, their own creativity, regardless of the outcome, is of great importance to the development of their brain functions and consequently, their future performance at school and at work.

Nowadays, to excel at work not only means that people should be good at what they are asked to do, but also means that they should think out of the box and solve problems in their own, more efficient way. This ability relies, at least partly, on the early exposure to creative works.

5) How do young people share arts with others?

In the past decades, young people lent their collections of art works, like CDs, novels and paintings to their friends or they admired the art together at one’s home. But those sharing are limited to a certain range, for example if my friend moves out of town, I will never get to listen to his Beethoven CD once again.

However, nowadays, internet enables everyone to share the resources they have to others who might be 10000 miles away. My friend, who is a real Beethoven enthusiast, might even post a video on Bilibili, sharing his comments on Beethoven himself!
