Part 1

How do you go to work/school?

Since the place I work is rather close to my home, I bought a bike and whenever it is not raining, I will ride on that bike to go to work. It is the optimal way for me because I only need 15 minutes to travel on bike but 30 minutes on subway. Also, it is a form of daily exercise, a replenishment for the whole day’s sitting.

What’s the most popular means of transportation in your hometown?

Since public transportation has developed in a tremendous speed in China, nowadays the most prevalent way in cities is subway. It saves many commuters’ time because its running time is not affected by traffic light and weather conditions and it can travel in the minimal distance. In the city center, there will be multiple lines converging, which greatly facilitate people’s travel.

How far is it from your home to work/school?

The travelling distance is 3 kilometers but the time spent on travelling differs greatly using different transportation methods. Since the shortest route includes a path that forbids cars to enter, if my dad is to send me to school, he has to take a much longer route, which suffers from congestion. So often I would choose to ride a bike.

Do you think people will drive more in the future?

I do think people will drive less in the future. More and more people start to realize the importance of reducing carbon emission so less cars, despite of the fuel they use, will appear on the road. Meanwhile, public transportation system has become more mature in that to facilitate daily need for outing. Cars will play a less important role in people’s lives.

Part 2

Describe a successful businessperson you know (e.g. running a family business)

You should say:

Who this person is

How you knew him/her

What business he/she does

And explain why he/she is successful

In China, the election of the most successful businessman will always have Jack Ma’s position and he is at present one of the most renowned Chinese figures worldwide. From the first appearance, it is hard for people to connect this short, skinny, dark-skinned man to one of the wealthiest businesspeople in China. Yet, it is within this seemingly tiny head that the brilliant and world-known ideas—Alipay, Taobao, Tmall—come from. Alipay is currently one of the largest online payment platforms globally and it is a revolutionary innovation that facilitates cashless payment in China. And Taobao is kind of indispensable in Chinese people’s lives. It’s fast shipment is one great advantage compared to Amazon and eBay.

He is extremely adventurous. Back in 1980s, Jack Ma was an English teacher in Hangzhou. Having a profession that most Chinese family would dream their child to do, Jack Ma did not settle for the peace of life. Instead, once he sensed the potential market of online payment, he was deeply interested. He is also calm and always makes full preparation. Upon being attracted by the new concept, Jack Ma did not immediately plunge into the unknow area. He paid several visits, to successful companies like IBM, to learn their mindset and strategy. Then when he thought it was the right time, he quitted his job and borrowed money from friends to found Alibaba.

Jack Ma’s story is too long to tell, but his starting the business illustrates his traits to the full.

Part 3

What factors lead to success?

In my opinion, the foundation of success is well-rounded preparation. For example, in an Olympic final match, although some player lose the match out of his/her body condition on that day, the steps he/she take to this final stage proves that before this unfortunate failure, he/she has always been a successful player and this is out of strenuous daily practice and astounding tenacity. Moreover, some claim that to become the final winner, a little bit of luck is also indispensable. I think the capability to detect the dawning of luck and to make use of it is also a representation of one’s ability.

What do people need to sacrifice for success?

People have to sacrifice their time for entertainment for success. Students, for example, if they want to master certain knowledge and receive high score in tests, it is imperative that they take practice ceaselessly. As a consequence, they might not have extra time spared to play video games or do sports. Also, the time spent with loved ones may be willingly abandoned for the sake of success. For an entrepreneur, he/she has to fly all over the world for the development of business, so the time he/she spends together with families is greatly decreased. Even, when an important conference coincides with an anniversary, the entrepreneur may choose business over family.

Which is more likely to be successful, family businesses or large corporations?

I think large corporations are more likely to succeed. They intend to hire the most talented minds all over the world to run the business, therefore the strategy can share international perspectives and caters to more complex situations. Also, in a family business, it is hard to establish a strict discipline to regulate everyone’s behavior. For example, a CEO always has difficulty in punishing a cleaner, his uncle, for his misbehave. What’s more, large corporations have higher mobility. Although losing an executive board member may result in temporary malfunction in some areas, the new substitution always brings revolutionary ideas.

Is it easy for a business to be successful without affecting the environment?

In modern concept, a business can intentionally reduce its impact on environment to a minimum. For example, a café could use recycled paper to make napkins and paper cups instead of regular napkins and plastic cups. They could also change their light bulbs to energy efficient ones, which can justify the luminance according to the surrounding. However, as long as a business exists, it is causing negative effect on the environment because from building of the place to everyday management, it always uses natural resources and most of them are non-renewable.

Can you provide some examples of family businesses in your country?

The Rong family is probably the first successful family business in modern Chinese history. During the early 20th century, the Rong family focused on manufacture industry to support national economy. Back then, their business spread all over the country until the outburst of war. During wartime, the Rong’s also devoted themselves in supplying national army against Japanese invaders. The family business now covers multiple fields from education to finance. The Rong’s family provides a paradigm for other patriotic family businesses and they altogether contribute to the flourish of China’s development.
