Part 2

Describe a time when you helped a child

You should say:

When it was

How you helped him/her

Why you helped him/her

And how you felt about it

I would like to talk about the time I babysat my sister’s son who was 2. My sister became a mother at a pretty young age, like 22. She was basically a child herself. Let’s just say, she wasn’t exactly the most responsible parent in the world. Whenever she wanted to hang out with her friends, she’d just leave her baby in the charge of me and I was like 15 at the time.

I didn’t like it because, the thing about my nephew was, when he behaved, he could be the cutest baby ever. But when he threw a tantrum, he was your worst nightmare. From the very minute my sister left the house, he started crying and crying and he wanted his mommy. There was nothing you could do to stop him from crying unless my sister came home.

So this time what I did was, I put on some rock music and turned up the volume and I just let him cry his heart out, lying on the floor, kicking his legs. At first, my nephew cried really hard, like, at the top of his lungs, trying to grab my attention. But all I could hear was the music, after a while, probably because all that screaming and kicking had really exhausted him, he was now just weeping. I turned off the music and I said “Do you want ice scream or do you wanna keep crying?” Of course, a child would choose ice cream and just like that, I stopped his crying.

I don’t know if that could count as helping him but from how he enjoyed the ice cream, I think I did him a big favor. What I felt was no way would I ever babysit my nephew again.

注释:

throw a tantrum 发脾气

cry sb’ heart out 尽情地哭

at the top of sb’s lungs 以最大的声音(喊/叫/唱等)

Part 3

1. What kinds of family business are common in China?

Most family businesses in China tend to be small businesses, like those street food stalls, vendors, most of them are mom-and-pop. China used to crack down on these businesses for making the streets untidy but now these family businesses are encouraged by the government, they help the country’s employment, especially in this pandemic. But there are also multi-billion dollar companies that are entirely owned by a single family, a good example would Lao Gan Ma, or Old Godmother, a chili sauce brand that was founded single-handedly by this widowed woman named Taobihua. The brand is a household name in China, and is popular overseas too. The company is now run by her sons.

2. ls it good to work with family members? Why?

I think it cuts both ways. I mean, because you are part of the family, you feel motivated to work hard, like you know you are working for yourself, for your family and you are entitled to the profits of the family business. So your morale is generally high when you work with family members. But it’s not all that sweet, sometimes you can have a family member who just has a bad work ethic and doesn’t show up for work a lot, it can be difficult for you to criticize or punish them, it can be bit of a thorny situation.

3. Why do people want to do family business?

I think the biggest reason is trust. I mean, when you start a business, you need help, you need business partners but where do you go look for them? You don’t need to look far, it’s so easy to trust a family member, right? Especially when there are business secretes involved, you’d feel much more comfortable that only family members have access to such information. Besides, when your business is barely up and running, you can’t afford to hire people. Having family members help you out can keep the costs of the business low. So you have more money to invest in and grow your business.

4. What benefits are there when working for big companies?

At the top of the list is pay. You can make a high salary working for big companies, with that money, you can achieve your financial goals more easily. And there are great perks offered to employees, from subsidized gym memberships to book clubs and social events. And, a larger company means a larger pool of talent, and big companies typically attract the best of the best. This means that you’ll have the opportunity to learn from people who are experts in their field, which is great for your professional and personal development.

mom-and-pop 夫妻店

vendor 小商贩

singlehandedly 仅凭一己之力地

widow 寡妇

it cuts both ways 有好也有坏
