Part 1 Geography

1)How do you like Geography

I am definitely not a good student in Geography class because I always mess up all the time zones and different continents and countries, things like that. It is naturally hard for me to form a picture of the world inside my head so I guess my talent is at somewhere else.

2)Do you think geography is useful?

I reckon it is. I mean, it appears in many aspects of our lives. We need information of the weather to decide how to react in the following days. Also, if we do geographical analysis on a certain area, it is easier for the government to come up with a comprehensive developmental plan.

3)Have you ever learned geography?

Yes, geography is a compulsory course in middle schools in China and I started learning geography ever since I was in 7th grade. My geography teacher was nice though, it was just that I was not able to learn it well. I feel pretty sorry for that actually.

4) Do you want to be a geography teacher?

That’s probably the last job I want to do on this planet. Beside the fact that I perform terribly in geography tests, I think I do not fit for a teacher’s job. I am extremely introvert and it is unbearable to stand on the stage and talk to the whole class to meet their expectations.

Part 2

Describe a sportsperson you admire

You should say:

Who he/she is

What you know about him/her

What he/she is like in real life

What achievement he/she has made

And explain why you admire him/her

“Have you ever seen Los Angeles at 4 before dawn?”

This has been the motto of generations of players. And whenever they want to give up, this question will give them strength to carry on. This sentence is from Kobe Bryant, a legend in the basketball hall of fame. Even he passed away in an unfortunate accident, his spirit lingers on forever to encourage future players.

Hardworking is his nametag. He started low, as an ordinary guard in the Los Angeles Lakers. Due to the physical constraints, he had to push himself to the limits to survive in the super demanding NBA league. So, when he woke up at 4 a.m. and started training, the stadium was lit up in the middle of the night, like a lone star in a shady night sky.

He is loyal. 20 years he spent in the league and he never changed his team. He won his team 5 championships and also won himself countless awards and names. Even in the twilight of his career, he did not change his allegiance and strive for championship in another competitive team, which he obviously had the chance to. Instead, he devoted himself into passing on skills and experience, and his spirit of course, to the rookies.

Kobe Bryant has transcended a basketball player and is a world-known figure, a role model for any ordinary you and me who has a dream and fear that the effort won’t pay off. The secret, his secret is always that we do it, right now.

Part 3

1)Should students have physical education and do sports at school?

Definitely. A lot of students view the PE lesson as a temporary escape from the heavy workload and those opinions are understandable. In order to facilitate academic performance, a healthy body is a must. Without enough energy, students get sleepy easily in class and at night. Their efficiency therefore decreases.

Moreover, the PE lesson is far more than just playing around. Teachers often teach basic rules of some popular sports and it can trigger some students’ interest in that area and make it a life-long hobby. This also helps identify some natural talents so they can receive proper training to become professionals.

2) What qualities should an athlete have?

Apart from being hardworking and talented, I think athletes must have a clear career goal to strive for. By setting up a reachable destination, everything on the way seems to make more sense than ever and by reaching a small goal, a sense of accomplishment serves as a stimulus to move forward. Training is definitely boring and tedious and even torturing. If they do not know where they head to, it is impossible to persist in this kind of intimidating practice. Also, they have to be optimistic. Athletes are public figures and they take on partly the expectation of the audience, which means criticism might be overwhelming. If they cannot tackle this issue well, depression may lead to foreseeable pitfalls. When they are desperate about the future and themselves, they cannot succeed.

3) Is talent important in sports?

Talent is a must if an athlete wants to excel in that area. It is hard to deny the importance of hardworking but even after strenuous efforts, an athlete can perform well but is hard to stand out. For example, A great number of swimmers plunge themselves into the pool ceaselessly for practices, but when Michael Phelps swings his disproportionally long arms and legs, others could only compete for the silver medal. However, those with talents are prone to become lazy or sluggish because they know they would outperform most people even they do not train hard. In that case, those gifted athletes can never be real champions.

4)ls it easy to identify children’s talents?

Actually, it depends on the type of talents. If the child is a genius in, say, math or language learning, this kind of talent is exhibited in an early stage of life and is easier to detect. I’ve heard that some kids could master 4 different languages in the first five years in life and later became a famous linguist. When it comes to the physical talents, some do not leave traces until puberty, when children meet a great leap in their bodily functions. Some boys can grow up to five to six inches in only one year and soon became the future star on the basketball field. Such kind of talent might partly result from environmental influence, like proper diet and abundant nutrition intake, which might cause the spurt in children’s height. So it’s hard to tell before the change happens.
