One interesting building I would like to describe is the Oriental Pearl Tower, located in the Lujiazui area of Pudong, Shanghai. It's situated along the Huangpu River and stands as one of the most iconic landmarks in the city. You can easily spot it from almost anywhere in Shanghai because of its unique design.
The Oriental Pearl Tower is about 468 meters tall and was completed in 1994. What makes it so distinctive is its futuristic design, featuring several spheres of different sizes, connected by sleek columns. The largest sphere, which is around 100 meters above the ground, serves as an observation deck that offers a 360-degree view of the city.
Above this, there are smaller spheres that house restaurants and exhibition spaces. At night, the tower is beautifully illuminated, making it a major visual highlight of the Shanghai skyline.
This building serves multiple functions. First, it's a broadcasting tower that houses radio and television transmission equipment, helping to provide broadcast services to the city. Second, it is a tourist attraction, with its observation decks and revolving restaurants offering breathtaking views of Shanghai. Lastly, it also has exhibition spaces, where visitors can learn about the city’s history and development.
I find this building interesting for several reasons. Firstly, its design is a beautiful blend of modernity and tradition. The concept behind the design is inspired by the imagery of pearls falling onto a plate, a reference to a famous poem from the Tang Dynasty. This fusion of cultural symbolism with contemporary architecture makes it an interesting representation of Shanghai’s rapid modernization while still honoring its rich history.
Secondly, the tower is multifunctional, combining broadcasting, tourism, and cultural exhibitions, which makes it a dynamic and versatile building. Finally, it’s a major symbol of Shanghai and reflects the city’s forward-thinking mindset and impressive growth.
Overall, the Oriental Pearl Tower is not just an architectural wonder but also a cultural landmark, symbolizing Shanghai’s continuous evolution.

In my country, a mix of modern and traditional buildings are popular. In urban areas, skyscrapers and modern office buildings are common, reflecting the country's rapid development and economic growth. Many of these buildings are designed with sleek, glass exteriors to accommodate businesses and residential spaces.
In contrast, historical buildings, such as temples, palaces, and colonial-era houses, are also popular, particularly in older cities or cultural districts. These buildings often represent the rich history and architectural heritage of the country.
2.is it worth spending a lot of money on the exterior appearence of a building?
It depends on the purpose of the building. For commercial or iconic buildings, investing in the exterior appearance can be worthwhile. A well-designed facade can attract attention, boost a brand’s image, or become a symbol of the city, which can increase tourism or business opportunities.
However, for buildings meant for practical purposes, like residential housing, the focus should be more on functionality, durability, and affordability. A balance between aesthetic appeal and practicality is usually the most cost-effective approach.
3.is it more important for a building to look good on the outside or on the inside?
Both the interior and exterior of a building are important, but the priorities depend on the building’s function. The exterior plays a key role in creating a first impression, especially for commercial or public buildings.
A beautiful exterior can attract people and make a statement. However, the interior is where people spend most of their time, so it should be comfortable, functional, and suited to its purpose. In general, a good balance between both is ideal for a well-rounded building design.
