2022年5-8月雅思口语Part 2

Describe something that was broken in your home and then got repaired.

示范音频👇:

You should say :

What it is

How it was broken

How you got it repaired

And how you felt about it

I would like to talk about my old MacBook Pro that I purchased back in 2013 I guess. It was actually the very first Apple product that I owned, I loved how simple and organized the Mac OS was, and since then I have never chosen PC again. I was using it everyday for work, a really great productivity tool. I also edited photos and videos on it, it could always get the job done perfectly.

I think after I had been using it for like 3 years, one day, I just started hearing faint clicking sounds coming from my laptop, like the sounds of metal clicking on metal. I didn’t know what was going on until one day the machine wouldn’t start anymore. I tried repeatedly rebooting it but to no avail.

Luckily, I had built my own PC before, so I knew one or two things about computer. My initial reaction was that my hard drive must have broken down. I didn’t want to send my machine back to Apple to get it repaired, I knew it would cost me a fortune because my Apple Care had long expired at the time. What I did was I bought a hard drive of the same model online, opened the back lid of my MacBook, pulled out the broken hard drive and installed the new one. Then I reinstalled the MacOS, it was Mountain Lion I guess at the time. Then abracadabra, my laptop was up and running.

It wasn’t like rocket science to be honest, I think most people can do the job if they just spend a little time doing research online on how to change the hard drive of a MacBook. Still, I felt a sense of achievement being able to fix the problem. And I certainly won’t hesitate to dissemble any my of Apple products if it ever breaks in the future.

2022年5-8月雅思口语Part 3

1. ls it easy to find quiet places in your country? Why?

示范音频👇:

Well if you live in the city where there’s noise pollution all around,

with all the hustle and bustle going on, it can be pretty hard to find a quiet place, like, during the day, when I’m in the classroom in school, I can still hear noise coming from the busy traffic, definitely not an ideal study environment.

If you really want somewhere that’s like tranquil. I suggest you go to the mountains in Tibet. I once did a camping trip there, like deep, deep in the mountains, in a no man’s zone. At night, I didn’t even hear any insects, it was pitch dark, everything was dead silent, which was kinda scary for a city dweller like me.

2. Why do old people prefer to live in quiet places?

示范音频👇:

I think it has a lot to with old people’s psychology, like when people get old

they become averse to living in the city where there’s too much going on, too much noise created, which they don’t want any part of. Noise pollution gets old people annoyed, even raises their blood pressure, which is a health risk.

Generally, old folks prefer being close to nature, like living in villages where they are better able to appreciate nature, spend their retirement away from cities. I guess it’s easier to find inner peace in those quiet places.

3. Why are there more noises made at home now than in the past?

示范音频👇

I think a lot of those noises come from all the home appliances that we use on a daily basis. For example, we Chinese like to stir-fry our food in a wok, problem is, stir frying creates annoying fumes and you need a powerful ventilator to suck all fumes out. And when that ventilator starts working, the noise is deafening.

I mean, not just the ventilator, your refrigerator that is supposed to be quiet, you still hear it humming on the other side of the wall late at night while you are lying in bed. And all the sounds made by our smart phones, computers, tvs…our homes are really filled with a cacophony of mechanical and electronic sounds.

4. Why do some people like to use noise as background sound when they are working or studying?

示范音频👇

I know that some people like to put on some music while studying or working and I think it can help people focus because music has a calming, soothing effect. When your mind is at ease, you are generally able to concentrate on work/study for a long stretch of time and have higher efficiency.

Another reason why some people work/study better in a kinda noisy environment is that I think, most people living in the city where noise is part of daily life, we kinda have gotten used to always having some noise in the background, so much so that when there’s absolutely no noise at all, people should feel unaccustomed to it.

注释:

1. hustle and bustle (大城市的)喧嚣,熙熙攘攘

2. tranquil 静谧的

3. pitch dark 漆黑的

4. dead silent 静寂的

5. city dweller 城市居民

6. be averse to sth/doing sth 不喜欢

7. home appliances 家电

8. stir fry 爆炒(v)

9. fumes 油烟

10. cacophony 刺耳的声音

11. soothing 舒缓的

12. unaccustomed 不习惯的
