Part 1 Helping others

1)Do you usually help people around you?

Yes, I do. I always reach out a helping hand whenever others are in need. I think helping strangers is a best way to contribute to the harmony of society. For example, when I see an old man going uphill on his bike, carrying heavy loads, I would help him push the bike to save him some strength.

2)How do you help people around you, such as neighbours, family and friends?

First, I do everything I should do, so that others will not be bothered by my misbehavior. Apart from that, I always help others when my little effort could bring them great relief. For example, when I go for a lunch at a cafeteria, I always pack an order of take-out for my roommate back at university. Also, when I mown my own lawn, I try to get rid of the weed on my neighbour’s land.

3)Do your parents teach you how to help others?

They definitely do. Actually, they themselves have been acting as role models for me to learn ever since I was a kid. I think this is a better way for parents to cultivate their kids into a civilized individuals because action always speaks louder than words and if parents’ behaviors contradict to their word, their children will not follow their instructions.

4) Did your parents help you a lot when you were young?

Thinking back on my childhood, when I was a kid, I actually did not notice anything that my parents really helped me with, but gradually, I started to realize how they step by step lead me to pass all challenges in an instructive way. I mean, they did not do things for me while I could, for example, they did not feed me when I can use the chopsticks. On the contrary, they taught me how to use the tools to achieve my own goal.

Part 2

Describe an area of science (biology, robotics, etc.) that you are interested in and would like to learn more about

You should say:

Which area it is

When and where you came to know this area

How you get information about this area

And explain why you are interested in this area

I have always fascinated the boundless universe and all the celestial bodies within it. The term Astronomy was later introduced, though, and more intimidating actually, but my enthusiasm never faded. My first exposure to astronomy was like other regular kids—I was in terror of aliens in the animation Doraemon, fearing that they would capture me in their spaceship and take me away in the universe.

Then in science lessons in primary school, for the first time, I got to know the composition of universe, the Milky Way and the solar system. Knowing that the already gigantic Earth was just as trivial as dust in the boundless universe, I wanted to explore more of this no-man land, or void, to be specifically.

Later, when I grew older, I visited the planetarium very often. Even the descriptions and pictures in the books were good enough, it was incomparable to the models in the display cabinet. I could stare at the model earth rotating for a whole afternoon!

I think my story with universe and astronomy isn’t yet coming to an end. I would like to know and research more and more in the future.

Part 3

1) Why do some children not like learning science at school?

That partly attributes to the difficulty of science-related disciplines. Math, for example, requires students to base their calculation on not only the given equations and formulas but also their ability to adapt those formulas to a specific context. Since many students cannot solve those difficult problems, they cannot get positive feedback from the effort they pay, and gradually, they lose interest in the subject. Also, I think some teachers should take the blame. Their way to familiarize students with the already boring concepts is boring itself. So when some students could not even firmly take the first step, they naturally fear the subject.

2) ls it important to study science at school?

I think science education plays an indispensable role in a person’s life, regardless of his/her job choices. The goal of cultivating a ‘future star’ in a certain scientific field is just a side dish. The true purpose, I think, is to make everyone understand how the world functions and the basic rules that lie underneath. In physics, people learn how would an object behave when being exerted a force; in chemistry, people learn what properties does a substance have and how people can utilize that in real contexts. Without those knowledge, people will be baffled in daily lives when confronted with the simplest situations.

3) Which science subject is the most important for children to learn?

Math, indeed. Math and philosophy are considered as the most basic disciplines and all other subjects are branched from them for specific contexts. It is clear that across the globe, when children are about the age for school, math must be the first science subject for them to learn, together with other art subjects like their mother tongue. The numbers and arithmetic appear in almost all other science subjects. Without solid foundation in math, it is impractical for one to excel at any other science fields. Moreover, as math is widely used in daily lives, it is easier to teach to those almost ignorant children, using specific examples to facilitate understanding.

4)Should people continue to study science after graduating from school?

I think that depends. Surely, if people aspire to further their study in a related area, the basic knowledges that are taught to everyone would not suffice. They need to focus on one or several specific areas and sharpen their understanding in those areas. Then they can apply the theoretical knowledge to real working contexts or research frameworks. The application, in turn, facilitates their further investigation. Others like ordinary you and me have far less exposure to those technical elements so catching up the daily news about science might be the best option to keep ourselves from forgetting.

5) How do you get to know about scientific news?

I catch up-to-date news from various platforms, not limited to news apps because I don’t really search for the news and neither do most of the people. News pieces more or less pop up on our browser or on frontpages of social platforms. Nowadays, citizens are less concerned about to what extent has science developed to better their well-being—that does not tickle their nerves. So they invariably stay out of the business. To make the boring science more appealing, more influencers are introducing the latest breakthroughs in an audience-friendly way and that documentary-like videos are my favorite.
