Part 1 Puzzles

1. Did you do puzzles in your childhood?

Yes, I did. When I was a kid, I was not so into dolls like other girls. Instead, I was more interested in doing puzzles. This was because my parents told me that solving puzzles was a good way to stimulate my intellectual development. You know, being smart was a lure for a kid. Therefore, I’d rather spread the book on my table and stay focused. Sometimes I could even finish one puzzle within 1 minute, which brought me a strong sense of achievement.

2.When do you do puzzles, during your trip or when you feel bored?

I should say now I just do puzzles when I feel bored. To some extent, it is a way to kill time. All I need is a quiet place. Then, I’m allowed to immerse myself in doing the puzzles. However, if I’m traveling, I will be disrupted frequently. For example, the network connection is not always stable on the train. Thus, I have to stop solving puzzles from time to time and I may get lost. Consequently, I may feel annoyed and don’t want to have a try anymore.

3.Do you like doing word puzzles or number puzzles?

To me, I like doing word puzzles. I guess it is related to my previous experience. I did word puzzles the first time my parents introduced puzzles to me. Plus, it used to be a good way for me to memorize some phrases both in Chinese and English. Therefore, nowadays, whenever I wanna do some puzzles, word puzzles will be my top priority. To be specific, I enjoy word puzzles more from the force of habit.

4.Which is more difficult for you?

Frankly speaking, it is difficult for me to do number puzzles. You know, recognizing words is much easier than calculating the number because I’m not a person who is skillful in math. It is just beyond my capability. I mean sometimes because of the limitation of my calculation, I can be stuck on the puzzle for several hours. However, with sufficient lexical resources, I can always find a way out for word puzzles.

5.Do you think it is good for old people to do puzzles?

I do believe it because it is definitely good for their mental health. As we all know, after retirement, many senior citizens spend most of their time indoors, without any company. Therefore, doing puzzles will eliminate their boredom and loneliness even though they are alone. More importantly, solving puzzles can stimulate their brain, which may further slow down depression and lower the risk of dementia.

注释:

1.be related to 和…有关

2.be stuck on 被困在…

3.lower the risk of 降低…的风险

4.from the force of habit 习惯使然

5.immerse oneself in 沉浸在…中

Part 2

1. Describe a disagreement you had with someone.

You should say

who you had the disagreement with

what the disagreement was

what happened

explain how you felt about it

To be honest, I had a hard time coming up with something to talk about for this topic because I rarely disagree with my friends. I really didn’t know what to talk about, but then I remembered an argument I had with my roommates a long time ago about how to assign multiple tasks in order to accomplish the group project.

I am not entirely sure when it happened because I do not have a head for dates, but I am guessing it must’ve been 2 or 3 years ago. At that time, I was still studying at university and was sharing a room with 3 roommates. You know, since we lived together, we often went to classes together, and normally we had to form a group whenever there was a group project. At first, we just assigned the tasks according to each one’s schedule to keep it fair. However, I remember, one day, I got sick and was having a headache. Therefore I didn’t think it was suitable for me to do the presentation because I couldn’t express myself well. I just told them that it was impossible for me to continue the task because I felt really uncomfortable. They were really unhappy with that because they thought that I was pretending to be sick. As a result, we just had a spat.

Although I was upset, I still calmed them down first and then told them that we should try to be understanding and learn to put ourselves in each other’s shoes. Then we realized that we had been wrong, and we apologized to each other. In the end, we completed the task together by dividing the presentation into 4 parts and we all shared something with the audience.

The way I see it, I think it’s okay to argue with friends and family sometimes, but the most important thing is to always try to talk things out with them.

Part 3

1. What do you do if you disagree with someone?

I think it depends. If it is not a big deal, like what to eat or where to go, I will try to pretend to agree with others’ ideas because I don’t wanna have conflicts with others and I prefer getting along well with them. You know, just follow the majority. However, if it is related to some serious issues, like whether we should protect stray animals. I will state my opinion directly even when I know we may disagree with each other。

2. How can we stop an argument from escalating into a fight?

First and foremost, we have to learn how to calm down. Say, we can take a deep breath and look before we leap. If you cannot control yourself, you will be viewed as a very self-centered person and definitely you will hurt others’ feelings. Second, it is necessary to apologize. It is a good way to keep others’ hair on. You know, it is a matter of courtesy to show some respect and understanding. Otherwise, other people probably want to stay away from you because no one likes such a person who is stubborn in their social circles.

3. Who do you think should teach children to respect their teacher?

First, parents should do so because it is known to all that parents are the best teachers for children. If parents always tell children that they should behave themselves and respect their teacher, like listening to them carefully during class and saying hello to them in a polite way, they will follow the rule. Second, teachers should also take responsibility. To be specific, they should teach children to respect everyone, including teachers. This is because it is their duty to help develop children’s moral values.

4. What disagreements do parents and children usually have?

I guess it is always related to time management. I mean, how do children divide their time between study and extra curriculum activities? You know, children are more willing to hang out with their friends to do some outdoor activities. Even when they stay at home, they are more likely to play video games or just watch TV instead of accomplishing their assignments. However, their parents tend to supervise them frequently. Therefore, they may end up in a disagreement or even a quarrel.

注释:

1.come up with:想出

2.put sb in other’s shoes:换位思考

3.follow the majority:随大流

4.look before we leap:三思而后行

5.pretend to:假装

6.stray animals:流浪动物

7.behave onself:放规矩

8.end up with/in:以…告终
